Frequently Asked Questions

What is SafeBite and how does it work?

SafeBite is a food allergy app that lets you scan any restaurant menu with your phone camera and instantly see which dishes are safe for you. You set up your allergy profile once, and SafeBite's AI analyzes every menu item against your specific allergens. Each dish gets a color-coded tag — green for safe, yellow for ask, red for skip — so you can make confident decisions without guessing.

Which food allergies does SafeBite support?

SafeBite supports all 14 major allergens including nuts, gluten, dairy, shellfish, eggs, soy, sesame, and more. You configure your personal allergy profile once during onboarding, and every scan applies those settings automatically. Is SafeBite a food allergy app that works at actual restaurants?

Yes. SafeBite is built specifically for real restaurant dining, not just grocery shopping or recipe sites. You point your camera at any printed, handwritten, or digital menu and get instant allergen analysis on every dish. It works wherever you eat out — from casual diners to fine dining.

How accurate is the AI menu scanner?

SafeBite uses Gemini Flash to identify ingredients and allergen risks from menu text, including common preparation methods that introduce hidden allergens. Accuracy is high on standard printed menus, though stylized or handwritten menus may occasionally require a second scan. For dishes with ambiguous descriptions, SafeBite flags them yellow so you know to ask the server rather than assume.

Can I use SafeBite as a food and symptom tracker app?

SafeBite keeps a scan history of every menu you have analyzed and every restaurant you have visited, building a personal record of safe and unsafe dining experiences. While it is not a dedicated food and symptom tracker, the history log helps you identify patterns and revisit places where you ate safely. For detailed symptom journaling, a dedicated food diary app works well alongside SafeBite.

Does SafeBite work as a food allergy diary?

SafeBite's scan history functions as a practical food allergy diary for restaurant meals, logging each scan with the restaurant, date, and what was flagged. You can build a personal safe-restaurant list over time based on your real dining history. If you need a detailed food allergy diary that also tracks home meals and reactions, see our guide on what to track and why.

Does SafeBite work for food intolerances, not just allergies?

Yes. SafeBite is also a food intolerance app — it supports gluten intolerance, lactose intolerance, FODMAP sensitivities, and other non-allergic dietary restrictions alongside true allergens. You add any combination of allergies and intolerances to your profile, and every scan flags dishes accordingly. There is no need to manage a separate app for intolerances and a separate one for allergies.

Is SafeBite free?

SafeBite offers a 7-day free trial with full access to all features, including unlimited menu scans. After the trial, you get 3 free scans, then a subscription is required to continue scanning. Pricing is $4.99 per month or $29.99 per year.

How is SafeBite different from other food allergy apps like Fig Food or Spokin?

Most food allergy apps focus on grocery product barcodes or restaurant reviews — they tell you what other people thought, not what is on the menu in front of you right now. SafeBite is the only food allergy app built around real-time restaurant menu scanning: you snap the menu, get instant per-dish analysis, and make your decision before you order. Fig Food scans packaged products only; Spokin is review-based. SafeBite fills the gap at the table.

Does SafeBite work on handwritten or digital menus?

Yes. SafeBite's AI is trained to handle printed menus, handwritten specials boards, and photos of tablet or screen menus. Image quality affects accuracy, so a clear, well-lit photo gives the best results. If a menu is too low-contrast to read reliably, SafeBite will indicate low confidence so you know to verify with the server.

How is SafeBite different from just asking the waiter?

Waiter knowledge about allergens is inconsistent — staff may not know preparation methods, shared fryers, or sauce ingredients. SafeBite analyzes the menu text directly, giving you an independent second opinion before you even ask. This does not replace talking to your server, but it gives you specific, informed questions to ask rather than relying on a general assurance that something is safe.

What happens to my allergy profile and scan data?

Your allergy profile and scan history are stored securely and are never sold to third parties or shared with restaurants. SafeBite's privacy policy follows standard data protection practices and is published on the Verto Studios website. You can delete your profile and all associated data at any time from within the app.

Is SafeBite available on iPhone and Android?

SafeBite is currently in the final packaging phase and will launch on both iOS and Android. You can join the waitlist now to get early access when the app goes live. Waitlist members are notified first and may receive an extended trial period at launch.

Can SafeBite help if I have celiac disease, not just a gluten sensitivity?

SafeBite supports celiac disease as a distinct allergy profile, flagging not just obvious gluten sources but also hidden risks like sauces, marinades, and shared preparation surfaces mentioned on menus. The color-coded system gives you a clear risk level per dish — green, yellow, or red. For celiac diners, the yellow caution tag is especially important: it means the dish may carry cross-contact risk and warrants a direct conversation with the kitchen.
